The D'Angelico EXL-1 Amber is a brass guitar inspired by the 1947 "Excel" single-cut design. Constructed with a spruce top and a flamed maple back and sides (all plywood), the body offers a warm, natural acoustic sound suitable for playing rhythm accompaniments and solos. A three-piece neck with a "C" profile is glued to an ebony fingerboard fitted with twenty-two frets (Jescar 47/104 Nickel Silver). Orientation on the fingerboard is facilitated by mother of pearl position blocks (Mother of Pearl Split Block).
The Johnny Smith Floating Mini-bucker amplifies the instrument's warm "woody" acoustic sound without altering its character. The settings can be adjusted using the volume and tone controls.
The body of the guitar is balanced by the company's signature headstock, adorned with mother-of-pearl company and Excel Shield logos. Stable tuning and good sustain are guaranteed by the attachment of the strings through the Graphtech NuBone XL zero fret in the Grover 150 Imperial movement and through the ebony fretboard in the truss rod (D'Angelico Stairstep). The guitar's stylish look is accentuated by the body, fingerboard and headstock binding, gold hardware and Scalini five-ply pickguard.
