The x731 (Melcor 1731) and x18 (Dean Jensen 918) operational amplifiers saturate slightly differently. The 1731 saturates earlier and has a stronger sound coloration, while the 918 is almost linear and saturates later with less coloration. The output transformer with an iron core colors the sound more noticeably than a transformer with a conventional ferronickel core.
The amplifier is very versatile, you can amplify it up to distortion, which sounds e.g. very nice on guitar, bass guitar and other instruments that like a very excited sound.
Remember that a little change here and there often makes a big difference in the final mix, but it may not be clearly noticeable at first listen. The differences in the two operational amplifiers and the TB12 output transformers are subtle, but they start to stand out at saturation and can make a big difference to the sound of the final mix. Both home and professional studios will find in the TB12 an extremely powerful sidekick and a fully professional device that enriches the sound in a way that pleases the listener's ear.
If you are one of those tireless sound experimenters, you will truly love this preamp.
