The power output of this amp is 100W, which is really more than enough. The final amplifier is equipped with four 6L6GC tubes and one ECC83, and there is a built-in tube protection and monitoring system. The other 3 ECC83 tubes are in the preamp, which offers 4 channels - Clean, Crunch, Low Gain Lead and High Gain Lead
The Powerball philosophy is to offer the widest possible range of sound settings to suit your tastes, but don't be alarmed, the controls are very clear. It's not for nothing that this Engle is said to be one of the most versatile instruments available today. If you look at the front panel, you will see 2 rows of potentiometers and 7 switches. The first 8 potentiometers in each row control the preamplifier, the last 4 controls belong to the power amplifier and therefore affect all channels. These 4 are Master volume A and B, which can be switched between - this is useful, for example, for jump boosting to solo, Presence and Depth Punch, which adjust the strength of the high and deep frequencies. In front of these controls there is also a Mid-Boots switch for boosting the mid frequencies and 2 switches after the channel switches - Ch 1/2 and Ch Up/Down.
The first row of controls changes the parameters for the Clean and Crunch channels. Here we find separate Clean and Crunch gain controls, then common bass and mid controls, a separate treble control and finally Master volume again separately for Clean and Crunch. Before the EQ section, there's a Bright switch for boosting the treble and a Bottom switch for boosting the bass.
The second row controls the Low and High Gain Lead channels. Here again we find separate Gain, Bass, Treble and Middle controls, but this one is separate for the Mid-Boost switches, and the Master Volume controls are also separate. After Gain are the Hi Gain Bottom and Lo Gain Bottom switches, which add bass to the respective channel.
There are additional controls on the rear panel. There are two dual and one dedicated footswitch input. The dual ones can be used for example to plug in a Z-4 footswitch, or a single MIDI footswitch with 6.3 jacks (e.g. Z-11). The special input can be used to plug in an Engl Z-9 switch. Next to the level adjustment is the built-in noise-gate, input, output and effect loop settings. Last are the speaker outputs. 1x 4 Ohm, 2x 8 Ohm, 1x 8 Ohm, 2x 16 Ohm or 1x 16 Ohm can be plugged in here.
The Engl Powerball 2 is an amp designed for the most demanding user, offering a plethora of options and of course beautiful sound and huge durability. Try it out and you'll see that the Powerball 2 really packs a punch.
