The Fly Rig 5 V2 is the second version of Tech 21's popular multieffect/pre-amp. It's a great choice for musicians looking for a reliable and easy solution to common stage problems (tangled jumper cables, ground loops, demoralizing dying battery signaling) while doing away with scrolling through preset databases and deciphering information from the effect display.
The basis of the multieffect is the SansAmp tube emulator (SansAmp section), here in a superbly clean tone setting with sonic adjustment options in the form of a three-band EQ and output volume (Level) and gain (Drive) controls. However, the multieffect possibilities don't end there.
Add considerably more punch to your tone by adding a separate Boost section (optional Pre/Post) with a 12dB signal boost (ideal for guitar solos) and activating the Plexi/Cali section, which offers a choice between a distinctive British rock sound and the thick '70s hi-gain sound of Californian machines.
The remaining section, i.e. the left-hand section, houses a delay effect (with a Boost DLA company box as a template) with vintage tape echo character, delay time from fifty milliseconds to one second, and tap tempo control. This makes it easy to achieve a wide range of impressive sounds, from short slapback echoes to impressive cascading delays. The V2 version now offers a separately switchable Reverb with a separate knob and Size button for choosing between the acoustic characteristics of larger or smaller spaces.
Add to all of the aforementioned features the pluses of an XLR DI output, an effects loop for connecting external pedal effects, simple controls in the form of footswitches and backlit potentiometers, and a robust construction with metal switches (studio-grade) and input jacks. You'll not only have a quality multi-effect at your fingertips, but also a back-up machine in case your "true and truly" vintage amp/combo "goes down" (not that we'd wish that on anyone).
