British guitar designer Alan Entwistle and JHS have dusted off the vintage design of Watkins Rapier (WEM) guitars from the golden era of rock & roll and given them a new twist.
The Rapier Saffire's double-cut body is made from African okoumé wood. A rosewood fingerboard fitted with twenty-two Medium Jumbo frets (including a zero) and positional imitation mother-of-pearl blocks is glued to a bolt-on maple neck with a pleasing "Soft C" profile.
A trio of custom-wound Astro Sonic single-coil pickups with Alnico V magnets give the guitar a clean dynamic sound with balanced response across the frequency range. Complete control over the final sound is provided by the controls in the form of a volume potentiometer, tone shutter and five-position toggle switch. Further sonic options within the frequency parameters of the pickups are offered by the Entwistle ATN5 five-position switch, i.e. up acoustic quality, boost mids or accentuate ringing highs.
The strings are mounted in Wilkinson E-Z-Lok tuning machines via a GraphTech NuBone zero fret, and in the original Saffire Hi Lo vibrato via a fixed cob. The nice workmanship is accentuated by the chrome hardware, three-layer split pickguard and gloss black headstock.
