The G&L S-500 electric guitar was introduced to the musical public in 1982 as an innovation of the classic double-cut design with new elements in the form of the Dual Fulcrum vibrato and MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups personally designed by Leo Fender. The USA CLF Research S500 Honeyburst presents a retro-futuristic vision of a late 1970s instrument, i.e. a guitar that predates all GL production, but already offers innovative features in the form of Dual Fulcrum vibrato and MFD pickups.
The body of the guitar is made of swamp ash. A maple neck with a Modern Classic profile is glued to a rosewood fingerboard fitted with twenty-two Medium Jumbo nickel frets. Position dots on the fingerboard facilitate orientation.
The three modified single-coil MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups differ from the regular production S-500 in the length of the pole extensions, windings and other small details. The guitar will offer a softer, more vibrant sound without losing the warmth of the S-500 series. The character of the sound can be adjusted using the volume potentiometer, two tone controls (Passive Treble and Bass), a five-position pickup switch, and the Expander mini switch, which expands the guitar's sonic arsenal to include pickup configurations for the tailpiece + neck and all three pickups simultaneously.
The strings are anchored in Kluson Vintage and Dual Fulcrum vibrato tuning machines with brass saddles and two-point mounting.
The guitar is supplied in a case.
The G&L brand was founded in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Leo Fender, George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt. The design of electric guitars and basses with the G&L logo thus hints at what the instruments of another world-famous brand might have looked like had Leo Fender not got rid of it in the mid-1960s. Moreover, G&L's American-made guitars are still made in Fullerton on Fender Avenue, so they offer a piece of guitar history alongside stylish design and great sound.
