In the case of the G&L Espada electric guitars, Leo Fender's project, shelved for almost fifty years, has risen from the dust. The original body shape based on the T-model design, the stylish pickguard, the control plate in an elegant blade shape and the overall concept was too appealing to leave the project lying in the drawers of the archives.
The body of the USA CLF Research Espada HH Vintage White is made of alder. A Caribbean Rosewood fingerboard (despite the name, it is not rosewood) fitted with twenty-one Medium Jumbo nickel frets is glued to a bolted maple neck with a "Modern Classic" profile.Orientation on the fingerboard is facilitated by pearl position blocks.
Two GL humbuckers with alnico magnets take care of the guitar's sound system. The character of the sound can be adjusted using a volume potentiometer, two tone controls (Passive Treble and Bass), a three-position pickup switch and two mini switches - one can split the coils of both humbuckers (coil-split), the other functions as a killswitch. Tuning stability and good sustain are guaranteed by the anchoring of the strings in the Kluson mechanics and the Saddle Lock tailpiece, which prevents movement of the individual saddles and thus loss of sustain.
The guitar comes in a gig bag.
The G&L brand was founded in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Leo Fender, George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt. The design of electric guitars and basses with the G&L logo thus hints at what the instruments of another world-famous brand might have looked like had Leo Fender not got rid of it in the mid-1960s. Moreover, G&L's American-made guitars are still made in Fullerton on Fender Avenue, so they offer a piece of guitar history alongside stylish design and great sound.
