The G&L Asat Special electric guitars represent what many consider to be Leo Fender's ultimate single-cut T design. The Tribute ASAT Special Gloss Black MP model from the more affordable Tribute series features a poplar body, bolt-on maple neck with a pleasing "Medium C" profile, and a maple fingerboard fitted with twenty-two Medium Jumbo nickel frets.
Two single-coil MFD (Magnetic Field Design) jumbo pickups with ceramic magnets and Leo Fender-designed adjustable pole extensions allow you to set the pickup output for each string individually. The MFD jumbo pickups are similar in character to the P-90 and Jazzmaster models. The sound settings can be adjusted using the volume, tone diaphragm and three-position pickup switch potentiometers.
Tuning stability and good sustain are guaranteed by anchoring the strings in tuning machines with an 18:1 gear ratio and Saddle Lock tailpiece, which prevents movement of individual saddles and thus loss of sustain. The stylish workmanship is accentuated by a pickguard made of imitation tortoiseshell.
The G&L brand was founded in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Leo Fender, George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt. The design of electric guitars and basses bearing the G&L logo is a nod to what other world-famous brands might have looked like if Leo Fender hadn't got rid of the brand in the mid-1960s.
