Before the Telecaster completely changed the shape and direction of modern music in 1951, Leo Fender made several different prototypes that reached end customers. The Vintage Custom 1950 Double Esquire electric guitar from the Fender Custom Shop is a recreation of one of these early models. This is an instrument made to the same specifications as the vintage original models, including the NOS (New Old Stock) finish.
The body of the guitar is made from two pieces of specially selected ash wood. The one-piece rift-sawn maple neck features a 10/56 "V" profile, and the fingerboard is divided by twenty-one Medium Vintage (50085) frets. An interesting feature is the compound radius fingerboard (7.25 at the zero fret and 9.5 at the neck), also found on some of the original Broadcaster/Nocaster models.
Two hand-wound '50-'51 Blackguard single-coil pickups from the Fender Custom Shop and "51 modded" Nocaster wiring (similar to the originals with a Blender driver instead of a tone shield and a brighter neck pickup sound) give the guitar a beautifully full open sound with the unmistakable Fender Broadcaster fretboard. A three-position toggle switch selects between the pickup sound (with the option to blend the pickup with the Blender driver), and two neck pickup positions - a full, punchy sound in the second position and a more obscured sound in the third (10k resistor and .001uF capacitor).
The strings are mounted in tuning machines in a vintage design and through the fingerboard with brass saddles through the body of the instrument. The guitar is shipped in a carrying case along with a guitar strap and certificate of authenticity. One extra electronics with classic wiring is included.
