What this effect is used for is due to the fact that it is a Distortion - its purpose is to work with the distortion of your sound. With a wide range of settings, the Big Muff is a very versatile effect that can produce a plethora of great sounds.
As for the controls, the first one is Volume to adjust the output volume, followed by Blend to adjust the ratio between clean and distorted sound, Tone to work with equalization especially in the treble area, and Sustain to adjust the amount of distortion and sustain length. Behind this is Gate, adjusting the parameters of the built-in noise gate, and the HPF and LPF controls, i.e. the high-pass and low-pass filters activated by the Crossover footswitch. These filters are built just over the distortion circuit.
Two footswitches can be found on the Riddle. The first is Bypass, which activates the distortion, and the second is Crossover, which activates the HPF and LPF. On the chassis you'll find an input for the cable from your bass, an output, plus jacks and a 6.3 mm XLR jack serving as a Direct Out for playing into a PA or recording. Effects triggering is indicated by diodes separately for Distortion and Crossover. Power is supplied by a 9-volt battery or adapter.
