The Gary effect pedal from the American company EarthQuaker Devices was created in collaboration with guitarist Lee Kiernan from the British rock band Idles. At its inception was Kiernan's request to create a more compact version of the out-of-production Gray Channel effect, which was one of the main ingredients of his distorted sound. So the developers at EQD threw themselves into exploring the Gray Channel circuit and came up with a smaller version of it, but one that is much more than a replica - in fact, Gary's dark, destructive side, which the Gray Channel effect still managed to suppress, was fully developed.
Gary is a compact effect with two cerebral hemispheres. The left one hides his softer side - a simple and natural-sounding overdrive that reliably brings your guitar's tone to life. You can use it as a pure booster or add gain with the Go control to achieve a natural distortion. The That's it knob then simply adjusts the volume of that left hemisphere. The right side of Gary's brain is much more aggressive and darker - it harbours a destructive fuzz that sounds like you're trying to slice through a slab of metal. Its range and sonic character is controlled by the envelope, the sensitivity of which you can adjust with the Yes! knob. The Oosh knob serves as the master volume for Gary's fuzz page. The box also includes an input for an expression pedal. It is powered by a 9V adapter (not included). All electronics are hidden in a sturdy metal chassis.

The effects are user-friendly and at the same time sonically revelatory and innovative.
