The John Taylor Signature electric bass from Dingwall is based on the limited edition Rio Dream Bass, but with a few design changes. In addition to stunning looks and precision craftsmanship, each bass offers great playability and tones with exceptional clarity and refinement. John Taylor of Duran Duran contributed to the instrument's development, so you'll find elements that reflect his personal preferences and style.
The body of the bass is made of lightweight nyatoh wood, the neck is made of maple and the fingerboard is made of pau ferro. Interesting design features include the "Rio Eye" inlay on the 12th fret and a headstock graphic inspired by the designs of artist Patty Palazzo, a longtime collaborator of John Taylor. Dingwall's signature fret system ensures optimum menza length for each string, contributing to excellent intonation and string tension, especially for the low B string.
The bass is fitted with three Dingwall FD3n neodymium pickups, which can be switched with the Quad-Tone four-position potentiometer, and their sound can be further adjusted with the tone diaphragm, volume potentiometer and two-band active EQ, which is driven by a high-quality Rupert Neve Designs preamp. This provides a wealth of sound adjustment options, plus a little bit of history. In fact, the choice of this preamplifier is a detail that symbolises a breakthrough moment in Duran Duran's life - their most famous single was recorded on a Neve analogue mixing console. There's also an active and passive electronics switch, but for fans of Taylor's sound, it's ideal to stay in active mode, where the boost and cut EQ provide a wide range of sonic possibilities.
The guitar features lightweight tuning machines and a minimalist headstock from Dingwall. Another handy feature is the magnetic battery cover, which allows easy access without the need for screwing. Dingwall's special strings, designed to optimize performance and harmonize with any style of music, are available in both nickel and stainless steel.
