The Soft Focus Deluxe guitar effect from the American company Catalinbread is based on the more basic Soft Focus model released in 2022, which was inspired by the Yamaha FX500 digital multieffect. This is the next step in the evolution of the shoegaze genre, and will be especially appreciated by fans of bands like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. This updated version greatly expands the capabilities of the original pedal and provides five new programs that allow you to properly explore the possibilities of this ambient, dream-pop genre.
While the original Soft Focus was based on a modified big room reverb with chorus modulation and octave effect options, the Deluxe version goes a few steps further. The basics are the same, but now adds a delay with fully adjustable echo level and time, and a distortion circuit that can be wired in series or parallel with the main circuit. You can create pulsating atmospheric backdrops enriched with skewed distortion, modulation or pitch-shifting. The box supports the connection of an external pedal to control the Delay time parameter or the volume of the effect.
The pedal houses a total of six programs, each of which can bring out a different aspect of the box - Standard Soft Focus stays true to the original version of the pedal, Long Reverb Tails extends the reverb decay almost infinitely and creates stunning ambience, Deep Modulation Warble creates multi-voice modulation, Shimmer Soft Focus adds a shimmering sound effect, Pitch Delay with Strong Shimmer focuses on the pedal's pitch-shifting functions and octave effect, and finally there's the Expression Pedal Input Control program, which lets you use an external expression pedal to control volume and create a rocking tremolo effect.
The box is wired as a buffered bypass. You can use a 9-18V adapter to power it - the higher the voltage, the more headroom and signal boost! All the electronics are built into a sturdy metal chassis.
