The Hammond organ is an electric organ invented by Laurens Hammond in 1934. His original intention was to replace the large church organ with a smaller instrument that could be easily transported, while building a cheaper alternative to the air-powered pipe organ. Eventually the hammond became so popular among keyboard players over the years in the 1960s and 1970s that today it can be heard in just about every genre of music from jazz to rock, blues, rock, church and gospel music.
