The Ironball machines are one of the smaller ones that can be found in the offer of the German company Engl. But don't be fooled, because despite their small size, these amps and combos offer a huge amount of possibilities, a fully grown-up sound set in the waters of stronger distortion and, of course, the quality that everyone expects from Engl. When you add to that the affordable price, it should be clear that this is a great choice for even the most demanding guitarists.
The power output of the Ironball is 20 watts, which is delivered by an amplifier equipped with two EL84 tubes. In the preamp you'll find four tubes, namely the ECC83 model In total, this machine offers 2 channels - Clean and Lead with one common correction. The unique feature of this machine is the built-in power brake, thanks to which the power can be reduced to 10, 5, 1 or even up to 0 watts, for example for playing at home or quiet recording. The headphone output is also a surprising feature.
If you look at the front panel, behind the guitar input there are gain controls separately for each channel, a common 3-band EQ complemented by a Presence control, Volume for the second channel and Master Volume. Behind these is just a Gain Boost switch, a channel switch and the obligatory pair of Stand By and Power switches. The rear panel offers a trio of speaker outputs, a Line-Out with speaker simulation and a headphone output. There's also a built-in reverb control, an effects loop input and output, and finally a pair of footswitch inputs. The aforementioned power switch is also located here.
The Engl Ironball is an instrument that will appeal to even the most demanding guitarists. It offers you tremendous reliability, quality and tone in a relatively small and affordable package that you can't get except with a full tube amp. With Engls, rest assured that they will never let you down.
