Ryoji Matsuoka is a prominent Japanese guitar builder who began making instruments in 1959 in the city of Nagoya on the island of Honshu, whose surrounding area has a very distinct guitar and violin making tradition, home to the legendary Matsumoku factory, Suzuki and a number of also important smaller manufacturers such as Sada Yairi, Kazuo Yairi (Kani). In the 1970s, Ryoji Matsuoka produced the top models of acoustic instruments for the Aria brand, only to start his own models after 1975, his workshop reportedly employed only around 15 people in production, so all instruments could pass Matsuoka's thorough inspection.
