Shortly after the first jazz guitars appeared in Europe in the late 1920s, the masters of the traditional violin-making centre in Schönbach, Czechoslovakia, began experimenting with their production. It didn't take long for Schönbach to become the most important centre of jazz guitar production in Central Europe. Historical upheavals and the forced departure of some of the German masters to Bavaria gradually stifled the development of the successful industry, yet the town (renamed Luby after the war) continued to produce quality jazz guitars until the mid-1960s. This publication presents the historical context of jazz guitar production in western Bohemia, the life stories of the most important manufacturers and a cross-section of their production from 1932-1965. It includes musical recordings of contemporary Czechoslovak hits on more than forty restored instruments.
