The small 14 x 6.5" Big Softy drum is handmade in the UK, where it was also extensively tested for twelve months. The Big Softy drum gets its name from its distinctive sound - it's deep, dense and smooth at the same time. It is the favourite snare of Ian Matthews, one of the founders of the British Drum Co. and a Kasabian drummer. The body is hand-cut using a 7.5mm thick layer of a combination of cherry wood and balsa wood core. It is strung with an Ambassador percussion membrane and a Hazy Snare resonant membrane from Remo. The Big Softy is suitable for use in the studio, but also for live performances in clubs or on stages due to its warm funky sound.
As with other British Drum Co. small drums, the Big Softy features Art-Deco palladium shells that give this piece a unique identity. The tensioner and the bands to the string are in the traditional British style. The triple-bent hoops are 2.3mm thick and are connected by tension screws with 3mm nylon washers to ensure smoother tuning and prevent spontaneous over-tuning. The distinctive sound of British Drum Co. products is primarily the result of using the Cold-Press Moulding process. The wood used in this method is not heat-treated to maintain the perfect shape of the body. The process is the result of many years of experience in woodworking and cabinet making, and British Drum Co. proudly lists it as the secret ingredient for their unique sound. The absence of heat treatment during pressing contributes to the stability and durability of the drum body.
