Tambourines are one of the most widely used percussion instruments and have long been found not only in folk music, but in many other styles as well. The instrument consists of a frame, which is usually wooden, metal or plastic, in which metal pads are inserted, sometimes there is also a sounding membrane on the tambourine. It can either be held in the hand or there are models for mounting in a drum kit.
