Ahead was founded in 1992 in a rather unconventional way. At that time, its founder Rick Grossman worked in the development of Easton, a company known for producing high quality baseball bats and sticks with cores made of various modern materials. But since Grossman was also a drummer, he decided to try to make a single pair of drumsticks out of these modern materials. He subsequently found that the aluminium he used to make them fulfilled his requirements for the perfect drumstick. Then all he had to do was add a polyurethane sleeve and a plastic tip to the aluminum core and the Ahead mallets were born. Since then, they have become one of the most in-demand drumsticks on the market, and not just among rock drummers.
The 5A mallets are the most popular and best-selling type of mallet in the world. The Fatbeat 5A is a longer version for a more precise and dynamic stroke or for taller drummers.
