The Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter is a compact pedal that offers both vintage and modern modulation effects with the character of a phaser, i.e. a typical sound wave. The Stage knob lets you choose from seven modes for this effect. In addition to the 4-, 8-, 10- and 12-modes with the corresponding number of applied filters, the PH-3 offers Rise and Fall modes with unidirectional sound shifts - up (Rise) and down (Fall) and a Step effect mod. The remaining potentiometers determine the speed and depth of the effect modulation.
The speed of the effect modulation can be set with the Tap Tempo function, i.e. by pressing the pedal switch longer and then tapping the tempo, or with an external expression pedal. The box, like all pedals in current Boss production, operates in Buffered Bypass mode. Power is supplied by a 9V battery or 9V adapter.
