The R8 is the smallest of Zoom's family of modern multi-track recorders. It is an eight-track recorder with the ability to record two tracks simultaneously in 16/24-bit/44.1/48kHZ WAV audio format. In addition to its recorder function, it also serves as an audio interface and controller for DAW and pad sampler and drum accompaniment generator.
The recorder offers two combined XLR/jack 6.3 mm inputs for instruments, microphones, and line-level and microphone devices (you can also connect electric guitars and basses with passive/active electronics via the input labeled 1). Phantom power (+24, +48 V) can be applied to both inputs to take advantage of condenser microphone services. The signal from the recorder is sent via two symmetrical 6.3 mm stereo jack outputs, which are accompanied (similarly to the headphone output) by a control that regulates the output volume. With battery power and a built-in stereo condenser microphone, you can record virtually anywhere with minimal equipment/accessories.
A USB port allows the recorder to receive and send digital data and act as an audio interface (2 inputs, 2 outputs) for the DAW on your computer/laptop. The recorder's user interface is sure to please anyone who likes to work in a DAW but prefers to work with real faders rather than a mouse when mixing. The R8 will serve you well as a controller for popular DAWs (Logic, Ableton Live, Cubase, Sonar).
R8 is also a pad sampler and drum accompaniment generator. With eight touch-sensitive pads, you can play up to 24 samples and loops (the recorder offers over 400 different drum accompaniments/patterns and loops). You can also create your own samples and loops from recorded audio tracks.
The recorder also offers more than 140 studio-quality digital effects (EQ/dynamics, reverb, chorus, delay) including amp/preamp simulations, effects specifically designed for vocals and stereo instruments such as keyboards, plus mastering algorithms (multi-band compression), chromatic tuner and metronome. The Zoom R8 can be powered for up to five hours using four AA batteries or unlimited via the included adapter. Data is stored on SD and SDHC cards (up to 32 GB). In addition to the recorder, a user manual, Zoom AD17 adapter and USB cable are included.
