Enjoy a dialogue with a great piano
The player plays, the piano responds in some way, and the player continues playing. The player expresses his/her feelings and the piano responds to this, thus actually creating a dialogue between them. For this to be a really rich exchange of stimuli, both the player and the piano must have excellent expressive skills. The piano must be easy to play and highly responsive and produce beautiful sounds. The CLP-700 series pianos meet all of these conditions, and the inspiration of a dialogue with them is sure to stir your desire for expression.
GrandTouch-S keyboard
Yamaha's latest type of piano mechanics features a wide dynamic range and a faithful response to every gentle touch, providing the pianist's fingers with a wide range of tones - from crisp and delicate to thick and powerful. The highly consistent hammers of this mechanics replicate the pleasing response when the hammers strike the strings on an acoustic instrument, allowing precise control of the tone.
Highly absorbent synthetic ivory on the white keys and synthetic ebony on the black keys prevent your fingers from slipping off the keys even during extended playing, providing the same feel as a piano.
Escapement mechanics on Clavinova keyboards
The escapement mechanism on the acoustic grand piano quickly pulls the hammers away from the strings immediately after striking the strings to prevent any interference with the vibrating strings. This mechanism produces a clicking sensation when the keys are gently pressed.
The Clavinova's keyboard is equipped with an escapement mechanism that reproduces a gentle snap at the bottom of the key press. The mechanics have been designed so that this click is only noticeable at the lightest key press, just like the mechanics of an acoustic piano. These keyboards have been modified to provide additional friction that balances key repetition and response without compromising performance.
Design philosophy
Clavinova pianos boast excellent playability and versatile features, along with a sophisticated authentic design that combines a compact form with a modern aesthetic to suit an instrument that sets the modern standard for pianos. At the heart of Clavinova's design concept is the way a player feels when they sit down at a Clavinova piano. Unnecessary elements are removed from the player's field of vision, creating a convincingly natural space and providing the feeling of sitting behind an acoustic piano. This represents Yamaha's attention to players who practice on the Clavinova and perform on acoustic pianos - these players are able to enter the stage without tension or worry because everything feels normal, as it should. The Clavinova piano is part of the player's everyday life - modern accents and color variations can be matched to any interior design or lifestyle.
Grand Expression Modeling
The interaction and interplay of the hammers, chokes and strings inside the piano respond to the subtlest nuances of the pianist's stroke, creating an unlimited range of tonal expressions. The stroke is understood as the complex work of the pianist, not only the intensity (softness/loudness) in playing and releasing the keys, but also the speed and depth of how each key is pressed. The Grand Expression Modeling technology introduced in the CLP-700 series translates the widely varied input from the pianist's fingers into an equally infinite tonal variation of the piano.
This allows the output to be varied by playing the keys at different depths and pressing speeds, even when using techniques such as trills or legato or emphasizing melody over accompaniment. Grand Expression Modeling excels at faithfully reproducing the output expected when using these techniques in many well-known compositions. In Debussy's "Clair de Lune," the relaxed bowing creates a weak tone that makes the main melody stand out more clearly. In Liszt's "Un Sospiro" the accompanying arpeggios highlight the melody without overpowering it, and the varied shaping of the melody provides the same quality as the vocals. In the last with Chopin's Nocturne trills, legato and other delicate techniques where the fingers seem to hover over the keyboard this gives the desired airy, smooth tonal expression. Playing such pieces on a highly expressive piano helps the pianist to learn different techniques and experience the same joy of expressing their feelings as a painter, but through sound.
The sound of two of the world's leading concert grand pianos - the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial
The piano sounds in Clavinova are recorded on several world-renowned concert grand pianos. One of these is the CFX, Yamaha's top-of-the-line concert grand piano model, which was specially sampled for the CLP series. Pianists around the world are amazed by the CFX's impressive, dazzling and richly expressive sound in concert halls. Another sampled concert grand is the Imperial, the flagship model of Bösendorfer, a time-tested Viennese piano brand with a passionate following. The Imperial model is known for its abundance of tonal colours and natural warm feeling when played. Yamaha faithfully reproduces the personal uniqueness of these concert grand pianos by meticulously recording the full range of the 88 keys, with subtle adjustments capturing the most harmonious tones each such piano has to offer.
The Virtual Resonance Modeling system
One of the attractions of an acoustic piano is the sympathetic resonance created by the vibration of the entire instrument. Clavinova pianos thoroughly reproduce this rich, aliquot resonance using a pioneering technology called Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM). VRM produces a richly varied sound that simulates the complex aliquot tones produced when the vibrations of the strings propagate to the soundboard and other strings, matching the timing and intensity of key and pedal presses. CLP-700 series pianos can even replicate the sounds made by the chokes when they are pulled away from the strings, in addition to the resonance of the piano's duplex scaling technology, the resonance of the strings, soundboard and instrument case. Clavinova pianos allow you to enjoy the same moment-to-moment dynamics and deeply resonant sounds produced by the entire body of a grand grand piano.
The full concert grand piano experience - even when played with headphones
The CLP-725 features binaural samples from the Yamaha CFX. Binaural sampling is a sampling method in which special microphones are placed on a dummy head in the same positions as the pianist's ears to capture the sound of the piano as it actually sounds and as the player perceives it at that moment.
We chose this method to create the ambience and full, natural resonance of acoustic pianos and transfer it to Clavinova pianos. This makes pianists feel as if they are sitting at the grand piano, even when playing with headphones on. The experience is so pleasant that they forget they have headphones on, regardless of how long they play.
We have also developed a Stereophonic Optimizer function to achieve the same effect for piano effects. Stereophonic Optimizer technology replicates the natural sound propagation in headphones for other piano sounds almost on par with the CFX's binaural grand piano samples.

2-track sequencer
The recording feature featured on Clavinova digital pianos allows you to record your playing of the instrument with a simple touch. This allows you to objectively evaluate your playing, for example. In addition, you can record up to 2 tracks, which can then be played back simultaneously, so you can record separate parts for individual hands, or play back given parts with different sounds.
