Arturia Microfreak is an original synthesizer with digital oscillators, analog filter and sounds from the popular eurorack module Plaits from Mutable Instruments. It works in monophonic and paraphonic mode, features a flat keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch and does not lack sequencer, arpreggiator, modulation matrix or advanced random functions. It is definitely one of the most interesting instruments in this price range.
11 digital oscillators (4 taken from Plaits) serve as the basis for sound creation, including classic waveforms such as sine, square or saw, wavetable, carplus strong, FM synthesis and more. The sound is then finished off with an analogue variable filter based on the Oberheim SEM.
A 64-step sequencer and a powerful arpeggiator are available for creating patterns. Patterns can be spiced up with the Spice and Dice functions, which randomize either individual parameters or gate length. The sequences will constantly evolve and kick-start your inspiration.
The keyboard is not a keyboard in the true sense of the word, but a surface joint. However, you don't have to worry about speed or expressiveness. The keys are dynamically sensitive and have polyphonic aftertouch, so each key can modulate a different parameter.
If you miss traditional controls, you'll find USB, MIDI, and CV inputs on the rear panel that make it easy to connect the Microfreak to your favorite controller, sequencer, DAW, or even a modular synthesizer.
