Two pickups, a single-coil bridge and a humbucker neck, give the guitar exceptional sonic versatility. Depending on the setting of the vari-coil control, the Tapped-Fifty pickup with added windings can produce a classic 50's gypsy jazz or country sound or a contemporary, properly hot Southern sound. The full Staggertwin neck humbucker can turn the vari-coil into a single-coil. Of course there are volume potentiometers and tone controls for full control over the character of the sound.
The strings are anchored in Wilkinson tuning machines via a GraphTech zero fret, and through a classic steel T-style cob with brass saddles through the body. The guitar is supplied in a case.
Fret-King electric guitars were brought to life in the 1990s by renowned guitar designer Trevor Wilkinson. Since 2008, the Fret-King brand has been distributed by JHS, where it is an extension of the popular Vintage models.
