The G&L S-500 electric guitar was introduced to the musical public in 1982 as an innovation of the classic double-cut design with new elements in the form of the Dual Fulcrum vibrato and MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups personally designed by Leo Fender. The S-500 Sonic Blue CR from the more affordable Tribute series features a poplar body, bolt-on maple neck with a pleasing "Medium C" profile, and a Caribbean Rosewood fingerboard (despite the name, it is not rosewood) fitted with twenty-two Medium Jumbo nickel frets.
Three single-coil MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups with ceramic magnets and adjustable pole extensions allow the pickup output to be set separately for each string. The pickups separately and in combination offer a wide range of tones - from the warm roundness of jazz to the characteristic punch of singles. The character of the sound can be adjusted using the volume potentiometer, two tone controls (Passive Treble and Bass) and a five-position pickup switch. The Push/Pull function of the Tone (Treble) knob expands the guitar's sonic arsenal to include configurations of pickups for the neck + tailpiece and all three pickups simultaneously.
The strings are anchored in tuning machines with an 18:1 gear ratio and a Dual Fulcrum vibrato with two-point attachment. Nice workmanship is accentuated by the stylish pickguard and instrument headstock.
