The combination of a cobbler humbucker and two single-coil pickups with Alnico magnets designed by Paul Gagon gives the guitar a balanced sound suitable for a wide range of musical styles, i.e. the authentic tone and feel of the best single-coil pickups from the late 1950s as well as the fullness of a humbucker. The character of the sound can be adjusted using the volume potentiometer, two tone controls (Passive Treble and Bass) and a five-position pickup switch. Push/Pull the Tone (Treble) knob to disengage the humbucker coils and change the setting to pure single-coil.
The strings are anchored in tuning machines with an 18:1 gear ratio and a Dual Fulcrum vibrato with two-point attachment. Nice workmanship is accentuated by the stylish pickguard and instrument headstock.
The G&L brand was founded in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Leo Fender, George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt. The design of electric guitars and basses with the G&L logo thus hints at what other world-famous brands might have looked like if Leo Fender had not got rid of the brand in the mid-1960s.
