The Goodtime Blackgrass Special five-string banjo is one of the so-called resonators, i.e. it has an arched dark stained maple wood cover with white trim on the back. The Special in the name refers to a special patented steel tone-ring. Thanks to the resonator and tone-ring, the banjo has a clear tone and piercing sound. In combination with the dark Blackgrass design, the sound of the instrument stands out not only in bluegrass, but also in punk, psychobilly and other genres.
The banjo shares many features with Artisan instruments - a resonator, stained dark maple neck and a fingerboard (Midnight Maple) whose dark colour contrasts beautifully with the twenty-two pakfong frets and white position markers in the form of decorative inlays in the Vintage Artisan design. The maple body is fitted with an eleven-inch steel rim. The strings are mounted in high quality Planetary-type mechanisms on one side, and in a nickel-plated steel string through the maple/ebony fingerboard on the other. Tiny protrusions on the seventh, ninth and tenth frets of the fifth string allow for alternative tuning. The visual impression is enhanced by the stylish bow-shaped headstock with ornate Goodtime Blackgrass engraving.
All Deering instruments (from professional models to the entry-level Goodtime line) are made in Spring Valley, California, USA by skilled craftsmen. Here, each piece is given the same care and attention to meet strict quality standards.
