This instrument is a replica of a modified 1954 Stratocaster "Virginia" by the famous guitar equilibrist Eric Johnson, who is known for his solo work and his performance in the G3 project. It was the Strat "Virginia" that helped to clearly define Johnson's distinctive tone with an almost string/voice character on the Tones and Ah Via Musicom recordings, making Eric Johnson recognizable among thousands of guitarists after a few seconds.
The guitar's body, made from two pieces of sassafras wood cut perpendicular to the flies (quarter sawn), is the foundation of the instrument's warm tone. A neck made from a single piece of quarter sawn maple is bolted to the body. Twenty-one Medium Jumbo frets divide the fingerboard surface. The "Soft V" profile of the maple neck provides an ideal platform for playing rhythm accompaniments, chord progressions and voiced guitar solos, while the flatter 12-inch fingerboard radius accommodates fast playing.
Two Fender 57/62 single-coil pickups and a DiMarzio HS-2 bridge pickup (only the top coil is active, i.e. single-coil) give the guitar a wide range of sonic colours, as well as Eric Johnson's unique tone. The middle and neck pickups are wired out of phase with the tailpiece. Two tone controls, a volume potentiometer, and a five-position pickup switch are used for sonic adjustments
The strings are held in vintage-style enclosed mechanisms and a synchronized single-turn tremolo with six separate saddles. The guitar's stylish look is accentuated by a logo on the headstock and a white single-ply pickguard that also protects the lacquer from scratches.
The guitar comes in a deluxe case with a certificate of authenticity.
